M. V Anscomb
The Canadian B.C. ferry M.V. Anscomb operated on the longest free ferry route in the world across Kootenay Lake for over 50 years before being decommissioned in 2000.The M.V. Anscomb is 182' long, 48' wide, was rated for 150 passengers, 7 crew, and 44 vehicles. It was built in 1946 at the Nelson shipyard, and ran the route between Crawford Bay and Balfour for 54 years.
On January 11th, 2004, a cold snap caused its heat exchangers and pipes to freeze and break, allowing lake water to enter the boat. The M.V. Anscomb sank. It took only about three to four minutes to sink. It sunk tail first, stood straight up in the air, until it was half under water, then it sat back down and sunk the rest of the way.
This freshwater ferry shipwreck lies just a couple hundred feet from the shore of the Woodbury Resort and Marina at a depth of 165 ft. THe M.V. Anscomb has now become a desired dive for adventurists from all over!
